FFI are thrilled to announce the official name of the Galana Women’s Initiative as “Galana Amani Women’s Group” as chosen by the ladies. Amani means peace in Swahili and peace is exactly the spirit in which these ladies work. During this week’s visit we saw the great strides these ladies had made in learning how to sew on paper posho bags. After seeing their work FFI was delighted to be able to present the group with a second sewing machine. The ladies have decided that they would like to make the school uniforms for the school children, which they can sell at a better rate than larger shops and still make a small profit for the group. We bought material, thread and buttons for the group to get started on. We have also bought some kikoi material so the group can begin to make kikoi’s which I have no doubt future FFI volunteers cannot wait to buy! Huge thank you to the people who have supported this initiative to date, including Jessica and Kaitlin Byrd, Agnes, Tina, Phyllis Power, Lorrie, Titus Tailoring in Timboni and Semmy’s shop in Watamu. The sky is the limit for these ladies!
